The university was established in its current form by the Queensland University of Technology Act 1990 and started teaching students at its main campus at Gardens Point in 1990. It has a secondary campus in Kelvin Grove, which opened at its present location after it outgrew its original site at Gardens Point. The university offers courses across all levels of education from primary to tertiary level; as well as several postgraduate research programs including PhD coursework degrees with most subjects being offered under both graduate entry or honours coursework modes for completion by high school leavers or those who have undertaken further study after completing their initial qualification (for example: Bachelor’s degree).

In its first year of existence (1909), QUT was known as Brisbane Technical College. The Queensland University of Technology was established on 1 January 1982 when it merged with Queensland Institute of Technology (QIT). Although the name changed over time, it has always been referred to as “Queensland University”.
