The University of Rochester is a private, nonsectarian university located in Rochester, New York. Registration at UR begins with your advising appointment.
The first step to registering for classes is to set up an advising appointment with your advisor. You can schedule an appointment at any time, but it’s best to plan far enough in advance so that you have time to make changes if necessary. If you’re an international student, please check back in early March as international student registration dates are different than domestic student registration dates.
This year, registration for first-year and returning students will be held between Monday, April 4, 2016 and Friday, August 26, 2016. First-year students will register in early April before they return to campus. Transfer students and newly admitted upper class students will register in May. Returning upper class students and graduate students will be able to register in late July.
The last day to register for classes is Friday, August 26, 2016. Students should plan to be on campus during this time frame to complete their registration process.

The last day to add a course or withdraw from it without financial penalty is Friday, August 26th at 11:59 p.m., one minute before midnight (all times are Eastern Standard Time).
A student who fails to withdraw officially or who fails to follow an approved preregistration sequence is liable for tuition and fees according to the following schedule:
If you withdraw from a course after the 10th day of the semester, you will get a 100% refund. If you withdraw from a course during the 10th to 14th calendar days of the semester, you will get a 50% refund.
1) Student withdraws prior to 10th day of semester: 100% refund;
- If you are not satisfied with the University of Rochester and wish to withdraw prior to the 10th day of a semester, 100% of your refund will be granted.
- If you are not satisfied with the University of Rochester and wish to withdraw after the 10th day of a semester but before 14th calendar day, 50% of your refund will be granted as long as you have completed at least one class.
- If you are not satisfied with the University of Rochester and wish to withdraw after 14th calendar day (if applicable), no refunds will be given unless it was due to extenuating circumstances such as hospitalization or serious illness which prevented attendance for most classes during that time frame. In this case, we would need documentation from a doctor stating that there was no way around missing those days so if possible bring along any medical records with dates showing when they occurred so our staff can verify this information.
2) Student withdraws during 10th through 14th calendar days of semester: 50% refund;
- Student withdraws during 10th through 14th calendar days of semester: 50% refund;
If you withdraw from the University during the first two weeks of the semester, you will receive a 50 percent refund of your tuition and other mandatory fees. If you withdraw after this time, you will not be eligible for any refunds unless there are specific extenuating circumstances (see below).
3) Student withdraws after 14th calendar day of semester or fails to register or withdraws from course(s): 0% refund;
- If you withdraw from the university after 14th calendar day of semester, you will receive no refund.
- If you fail to register or withdraw from a course(s), you will receive no refund.
- If you withdraw from the university, then you will receive no refund.
Closing
Students must be registered for a minimum of 12 units. Students who are not registered for at least 12 units will be dropped from the University’s records and may lose their financial aid eligibility. In addition, students who do not register in advance of the first day of classes are required to pay all tuition and fees due before being permitted to attend classes as well as any late registration fees that may apply.
