The University of Michigan (also known as UM, U-M, or simply Michigan) is a public research university in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Founded in 1817 in Detroit as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, 20 years before the Michigan Territory became a state, it was renamed to its current name in 1837. Its campus is located on both sides of the city’s Main Street Historic District and M-14 highway. UM has about 43,000 students and 7 campuses across the state: Ann Arbor; Dearborn; Flint; Midland; Saginaw Bay; and Traverse City.

International Requirement

For non-native English speakers, a TOEFL or IELTS exam is required.

Proficiency in English

If you are an international applicant, you must demonstrate proficiency in English by submitting one of the following:

• An International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score report showing a minimum overall band score average of 6.5 or better, with no less than 6.0 in any one area and no less than 5.5 in any two areas combined.
• An Internet-based test other than TOEFL or IELTS that is administered by Michigan State University’s International Admissions Processing Center and provides scores comparable to those required by TOELL/IELTS may be used as evidence of proficiency if approved by the Office of Admission in advance; specific approval must be obtained through your Michigan State University international admissions counselor before taking such an assessment test.

Admission Requirements

• High school transcripts: Your high school transcript must be submitted. If you are currently in high school, an official copy of your final transcript should arrive at the University by July 1.
• College transcripts: If you have attended any college or university since graduating from high school, we need an official copy of your transcript(s). This includes both undergraduate and graduate work.
• Test scores (SAT and ACT): The University of Michigan requires either the SAT with Essay or ACT with Writing scores for all applicants to Ann Arbor. We will accept scores from tests taken before or after December 2016 (the last time these exams were administered). The SAT code is 1847; the ACT code is 1465. Because many students take both exams, we require only one set of scores—you do not need to send us both sets unless you would like us to consider them for placement purposes. We do not require any special test preparation before taking either exam; however, we recommend that students register early because seats fill up quickly each year as more people take the test than can be accommodated by our limited number of testing sites across the state of Michigan. If a student takes only one exam, he/she must submit his/her score report directly from ETS by mail (code 1847) along with their application materials through Interfolio’s secure document delivery service rather than having it sent electronically directly from ETS—this ensures its arrival prior to our deadline date so that it does not hold up processing your application packet during our Early Decision round in December 2017 should this occur later than November 15th depending on when results become available following testing dates conducted earlier in November 2017 at different times across its various locations throughout Michigan range (i..e., Detroit Metro Area vs Traverse City North Central District vs West Side Port Huron Area etc.). These are the requirements for Ann Arbor and international applicants.

You must be 18 years old and a US citizen or permanent resident to attend the University of Michigan. You must have graduated from high school or earned your GED, and you must have a minimum 2.5 GPA on a 4-point scale if you’re an in-state student, or 3.0 for international students (4-point scale). If you graduated from high school within the past five years, you’ll need to submit ACT scores as well; your scores should be at least 21 on each section of the test.

Required standardized tests In addition to the SAT or ACT, students must submit two SAT subject tests: one in math (level 1 or 2) and one in science (physics, chemistry, or biology e/m). Applicants are encouraged to take these tests by the end of their junior year.
