Acceptance Rate

The Rhodes Scholarship application was founded in 1902 as a program to promote international understanding. Each year, thirty-two American students are chosen as Rhodes Scholars to study at the University of Oxford. With over 300 years of higher education experience, Oxford is known for its top-tier academic excellence and boasts more Nobel Prize winners than any other university in Britain.

What are my chances? While only 32 scholarship spots are awarded each year, there are approximately three thousand applicants—giving you a 3% chance of getting accepted. The 3% chance is much better than the estimated 0.1% acceptance rate for Duke University and Harvard’s 2.9%. The program is highly competitive so even if you think you have a chance at getting in, be sure to submit the best application possible!

Application Deadline

Applicants should be aware of Rhodes College’s deadlines, which are competitive and fast approaching. Early decision applicants should submit their materials by November 15, while regular decisions will have until January 1 to complete their applications.

Applications for early decision are due on November 15, 2019. Applicants in this pool will receive an admission letter by December 15. The application requires two essays that are a maximum of 750 words each and a secondary application that asks for information about extracurricular activities, community service efforts, leadership positions held and honors bestowed.

Students who choose the regular decision option can apply during the time period between January 2 and March 1. They may also send in an application fee waiver if they qualify as low-income students or take part in a free application for federal student aid program (FAFSA). There is no essay component to this type of application. All students must submit official transcripts from high school or any other colleges attended as well as scores from either the SAT or ACT college entrance exam. Students who wish to waive these standardized tests must instead provide two letters of recommendation from instructors at their current schools plus evidence of participation in extracurricular activities such as volunteer work or athletics.

For the composite ACT score, you’ll want to aim for 22 or above if you want good odds at getting in—but there’s no need to panic if you fall in the bottom 25th percentile with a 20. We’d suggest aiming just a bit higher than average for your best chance at getting in; a 23 would be about average here. For individual subject tests, you have slightly more flexibility here; however, we do recommend that students take any subject tests they plan on submitting with the highest possible scores .
