Rules Of Active Passive Voice

Rules Of Active Passive Voice

The following rules are applicable for both active and passive voice

Active Voice: In active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action. In simple words, when the subject does something, it is in active voice. Example: Ram kills a deer. Passive Voice: When the subject is being acted upon by someone or something, then the sentence is said to be in passive voice. Example: Deer was killed by Ram.

In active voice, the subject of the sentence performs the action. In simple words, when the subject does something, it is in active voice. Example: Ram kills a deer.

In passive voice, when the subject is being acted upon by someone or something, then the sentence is said to be in passive voice. Example: Deer was killed by Ram.

In both cases you can see that Ram and deer are nouns and they have been used as subjects (doers). This shows that if your verb has two objects like ‘ram’ and ‘deer’ then your sentence will be in Active Voice

Do not use ‘by’ when an agent is not present.

The rule of thumb is simple: If you can’t identify the agent responsible for an action, use ‘by.’ This is true regardless of whether or not that agent is present.

Example 1:

The door was opened by John Smith last night. (We don’t know who actually opened the door.)

John Smith opened the door yesterday morning without help from anyone else. (We know John did it himself.)

Example 2:

My car was stolen by some unknown person last week while I was away on vacation in Mexico City, so I had to buy a new one when I returned home yesterday evening after dinner with friends at a restaurant named El Toro Bravo located downtown near where they have many different kinds of tacos including ones made with chicken and other meats like beef but also fish too if you want something lighter than just meat which would probably be better since it would probably leave less fat behind inside your stomach if you don’t eat too much because then it might make you feel sick or maybe even give yourself indigestion if too much food goes into one place at once instead spreading out evenly across parts inside your body which could cause complications such as those mentioned above!

Inactive agents are not generally mentioned. If they are mentioned they are written in parenthesis or commas.

The grammatical subject is the person who performs the action in a sentence. The active voice is when the subject performs an action on its own, while the passive voice is when it receives an action.

For example: I saw Peter today. (Active)

Peter was seen by me today.(Passive)

The two most important rules of active-passive voice are: 1) Keep your sentences short and to the point 2) Use less words if you can

It can be used to avoid mentioning the name of the doer or agent to avoid embarrassment or attack on person/group.

The active voice can be used to avoid mentioning the name of the doer or agent to avoid embarrassment or attack on person/group.

  • It is often considered more direct and forceful than passive voice, especially when it comes to statements about oneself. In this case, it’s the writer who’s being attacked by not naming him/herself as the actor (who did something).
  • It can also be used as a way of making long, complex sentences shorter and simpler.
  • Finally, sometimes you might want your reader to focus on what happened rather than how it happened; in these cases, using active voice instead may help you achieve that goal without confusing your readers with unnecessary details such as “by.”

You can use it when you want to emphasize on what has been done rather than who did it. Or you can use it when you do not know who did the action and normally it is done just to avoid confusion and long sentences.

You can also use passive voice when you want to avoid embarrassment or attack on person/group:

  • The paper was written by students of BITS, Pilani for which they did not get any reward.
  • A dog was bitten by a snake in our garden yesterday morning!

Active Voice adds emotions and make the statement more powerful than general one. Active voice makes the sentence clear and simple while passive voice makes ambiguity by it usage of lengthy phrases and verb forms. Hence, active voice is much better than passive voice as far as clarity and simplicity of sentence is concerned. It gives more importance to actor rather than action i.e., receiver of action in case of passive voice sentences.

In the following text, both the passive and active sentences are given:

Passive Voice: The boy was hit by a car on reaching the road junction.

Active Voice: On reaching the road junction, a car hit the boy.

Passive Voice: The old man was killed by his own son after finding him sleeping with his wife at night when everyone else had already gone to sleep.

Active Voice: After finding his father sleeping with his mother, who had already gone to bed, it was too much for him not only because he could no longer bear this injustice done but also because he could not imagine life without them anymore either! He became so angry that he killed both parents!
