You could be eligible for the Saint Augustine Scholarship, which awards $1,000 to students studying the humanities. This scholarship is provided by Highline Historical Society but administered by Loyola University of New Orleans. If you are approved, you will receive your scholarship funds directly from the university’s financial aid office once you’ve applied to the school and been accepted through their regular admissions process.

Scholarship Description

This scholarship is named in honor of St. Augustine of Hippo, who was a classical Christian writer and philosopher. It is awarded to students pursuing a degree in philosophy or theology, who have leadership potential and a demonstrated interest in the philosophical and theological thought of St. Augustine.

The maximum amount available for this scholarship is $3,000 USD. To be eligible for this prize, you must be an undergraduate student enrolled full time at an accredited university or college in the United States with at least one more year of study remaining before graduation. Additionally, you must be pursuing a degree in philosophy or theology; however your coursework does not necessarily need to focus on the thought of St. Augustine himself—although it certainly can! In addition to providing proof that you are studying these fields (such as official transcripts), you will also need to submit two letters of recommendation from faculty members within your department or program as well as a personal statement detailing your extracurriculars/leadership experience and career aspirations.

The scholarships will be awarded based on academic merit (as indicated by GPA) and financial need. You must also demonstrate leadership potential through past achievements—whether they be via previous employment history, extracurricular activities or volunteer work. The deadline for applications is March 15th every year; winners will be notified by April 1st with instructions on how to claim their prize money within three years’ time (e-transfer).

Eligibility Requirements

To be considered for a scholarship to the Saint Augustine Program, young scholars must:

• Be rising sophomores or juniors
• Have majors in one of the following disciplines: history, philosophy, comparative literature, or theology. Students whose primary focus is in one of these fields but are double majoring in another field may also apply.
• Have successfully completed college-level studies in at least one of the areas listed above (a 3.2 GPA or higher is preferred)
• Demonstrate a financial need

Academic Level

The Saint Augustine Scholarship is awarded to two students in their final year of an academic program. You can be either at the undergraduate level, or postgraduate level; that is, enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts and Humanities (BAH) program, or a Master’s (MA) or Doctorate (PhD) program.

Undergraduate

“Undergraduates are college or university students who have not yet received a bachelor’s degree. An undergraduate degree is the qualification that most people receive when they study at a university or college. Undergraduate degrees are also called bachelors’ degrees, and can be awarded in many different fields of study.

For example, you could receive a Bachelor of Science degree, Bachelor of Arts degree, Bachelor of Commerce degree, or even a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree – depending on the course you study. The typical length for an undergraduate program is three to four years; however, some programs require more time to complete all requirements for graduation.”
