The Erasmus Mundus programme is an initiative managed by the European Commission and the Council of Europe to promote mobility between European countries at a time when global competition in higher education is intensifying. It aims to strengthen the quality of education and research by facilitating international collaboration; it also serves as a powerful incentive for universities throughout Europe.
Erasmus Mundus Master Courses (EMMC) are high-quality, integrated international study programmes, jointly delivered by an international consortium of higher education institutions.
EMMC are taught in English, in at least two EU countries.
EMMC are designed to provide the students with the skills required to face current challenges in today’s job market.
The main characteristics of EMMC:
- they combine or mix competences from different disciplines and countries;
- they teach students how to work together and communicate in a multicultural environment;
- they provide excellence in terms of higher education and intercultural understanding;
- they offer students a wide range of specialisation options through programme tracks, study periods abroad, individual research projects within the consortium or other institutions worldwide;
All these features make an Erasmus Mundus Master Course a unique experience.
These joint programmes may include periods of study, research and/or training abroad.

These joint programmes are designed to give students the chance to broaden their life experience by travelling abroad and experiencing a different lifestyle. Through the course work, students will be able to use the skills they have learnt in real life situations with other cultures. They will also be given the opportunity to learn about different cultures whilst exploring other countries.
An EMMC is awarded the Erasmus Mundus quality label by the European Commission upon evaluation of the course contents and institution providing it.

The label “Erasmus Mundus” is given to joint master degrees delivered by at least three institutions of higher education located in different programme countries. This label ensures a high-quality learning experience for the students who participate in these courses.
The learning experience includes:
- A high-quality education, based on quality assurance between all partners;
- Access to state-of-the-art facilities and resources, including the possibility to study or undertake research placements abroad (made possible through EU funding);
- Interaction of students from different cultures working together for a common aim.

Creating connections with people from other countries and cultures can be an important element of personal development and will be beneficial for future career prospects.
