Scholarship for Mechanical Engineering Students
If you are a student pursuing mechanical engineering but find yourself struggling to manage the high cost of living, then it’s important that you know about scholarships. A scholarship can help you pursue your educational dreams by making it financially easier for you. A scholarship is money awarded to a student in order to help them pay for their education. It is awarded on the basis of different criteria like academic achievement, financial need or other personal qualities and characteristics. Scholarships can take the form of grants (money that does not have to be paid back), loans (money that needs to be paid back) or work-study awards (available only if you work as part of a program).
A variety of scholarships exist in the market targeted at mechanical engineering students at different levels. You can find scholarships for undergraduate students, graduate students, those completing their post-doctorates and even mid-career professionals who want to go back for more education!
Mechanical engineering is a discipline that focuses on the design, production, and use of heat and mechanical power for the design, production, and operation of machines and tools. It is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines. Many students wish to pursue mechanical engineering but are not able to do it due to financial constraints. We are providing a list of scholarships for mechanical engineering students to help you achieve your dreams:

- The SMART Scholarship Program(SMART) helps develop an ever-expanding science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and research workforce by providing scholarships for undergraduate and graduate STEM+R majors who want to conduct defense-related research or work in a defense laboratory as civilians.
- HENAAC Scholars ProgramThe HENAAC Scholars Program encourages exceptional Hispanic high school seniors across the country with an interest in pursuing STEM careers at GEICO in support of our mission to accelerate Hispanic talents’ representation in leadership roles across America’s corporate sector.
Google Lime Scholarship
- You can apply if you’re a student with a disability.
- You’re pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a closely related technical field.
- You have a strong academic record.
- You’re enrolled in full-time studies at either a two-year or four-year university for the 2017-18 school year.
SAE Engineering Scholarships
SAE Engineering Scholarships are offered by the Society of Automotive Engineers International and is a globally recognized body in automotive engineering. They have 2 programs available namely Global Mobility Challenge and Collegiate Design Series Competition.
The Global Mobility Challenge, as the name suggests, intends to promote a sustainable global community by encouraging groups to develop mobility solutions for underserved people or regions in need. The Collegiate Design Series Competition is for college students who will be designing and building a vehicle that can be used in a race.[2]
ASHRAE Undergraduate Engineering Scholarship
- The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) offers the ASHRAE Undergraduate Engineering Scholarship.
- This scholarship is for undergraduate students who are studying mechanical engineering with an interest in heating, refrigeration and air-conditioning.
- The number of awards given varies each year and is at the discretion of the selection committee, but will be at least one per year. The amount of the award may vary from year to year.
- Students must have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent). Applicants must also show involvement in ASHRAE student activities at their college or university and have demonstrated leadership potential in related disciplines.
- This scholarship is unique because it gives preference to candidates whose applications demonstrate an interest in pursuing a career in HVACR engineering.*
SME Education Foundation Scholarship
As a mechanical engineering student, you may be eligible for the SME Education Foundation Scholarship. The SME Education Foundation provides scholarship opportunities to mechanical engineering students who demonstrate outstanding academic performance, leadership qualities and financial need. The scholarship amount varies from $1000 to $4000 per year, and is renewable for up to four years provided that a recipient maintains a GPA of at least 3.0 and remains on track toward a degree in manufacturing or a related field.
Hyundai Hope On Wheels Scholarship
This award, provided by Hyundai and its Hope On Wheels program, is awarded to a high school senior pursing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering (or another area of study related to the automobile industry). Students must be nominated by their school’s guidance counselor. The recipient will be announced in February 2021.
Society of Automotive Engineers Scholarships (SAE)
- As the name suggests, SAE Engineering Scholarships are offered by the Society of Automotive Engineers International. It is a globally recognized body in automotive engineering and they run various programs to promote innovation in mobility engineering.
- They have two different programs where you can apply for scholarships: Global Mobility Challenge and Collegiate Design Series Competition. In both cases, the students need to be enrolled in a full-time undergraduate program (in North America only). The application procedure is pretty straightforward, however, do keep an eye on their deadlines as they tend to change from time to time.
SAE Scholarships are offered by the Society of Automotive Engineers International and is a globally recognized body in automotive engineering. They have 2 programs available namely Global Mobility Challenge and Collegiate Design Series Competition. In the former, they promote innovative projects in automotive technology while in the latter they provide funding for practical projects aimed at solving real world problems. The funding amount varies from $1000 to $5000 depending upon your project and its impact. You must be an undergraduate or a graduate student pursuing mechanical engineering with an above average grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 on a 4-point scale.
Although scholarships are popular amongst the majority of students, it is the minority community that gets most of the financial aid. Many organizations and bodies in the US have set up funds for minority groups to help them pursue higher education. If you are a member of a minority group studying mechanical engineering, this list will help you find scholarships, grants and funds to aid your studies.
