Queen’s University

Queen’s University is a public research university located in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Founded on 16 October 1841 via a royal charter issued by Queen Victoria, the university predates Canada’s founding by 26 years. Queen’s holds more than 1,400 hectares of land throughout Ontario and owns Herstmonceux Castle in East Sussex, England.[9] Queen’s is organized into ten undergraduate, graduate and professional faculties and schools.

The Church of Scotland established Queen’s College in 1841 with a royal charter from Queen Victoria.[14] The first classes, intended to prepare students for the ministry, were held 7 March 1842 with 13 students and two professors. The college was established on land owned by the Cataraqui Town and Country Property Owners’ Association in an area known as the Waterside west of Portsmouth Harbor.[15]

The first principal of the college was Bishop John Strachan; the original site was chosen because it was adjacent to the cataraqui (now Kingston Mills) settlement nearby. William Snodgrass and several other local men were responsible for garnering support for the founding of the college. The College was modeled on Dalhousie University (then known as Dalhousie College) which had been founded in Nova Scotia five years earlier; however it differed from its model institution in that it did not grant degrees at this stage. Originally controlled by the Church of Scotland,[16]the college became non-denominational in 1853.[17] Upon Confederation in 1867, today’s “Royal Military College of Canada” (RMC) was designated as a campus separate from Queens paying rent until 1916 when RMC formally became part of Queens University.
