In the School of Music at the University of Illinois, students can study in one of nine departments:

Theoretical Studies and Composition, Organizational Leadership and Policy, Jazz Studies, Orchestral Conducting (with optional emphasis on music education), Wind Band Conducting, Ethnomusicology, Composition/Electronic Music (with optional emphasis on electronic music), Brass/Trumpet Instruction and Tuba Instruction.

School of Music

The School of Music at the University of Illinois is located in Urbana-Champaign. The school was founded in 1957 and offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in music education. It also provides programs leading to professional certification through the National Association for Schools of Music (NASM), which allows students to teach music in public schools across the country.

University of Illinois

The University of Illinois (also known as U of I, UIUC, or simply Illinois) is a public research university with campuses in Champaign and Urbana-Champaign in the American state of Illinois. It is the oldest and largest campus within the University of Illinois system. The university comprises 17 colleges offering more than 150 undergraduate degrees and 120 graduate degrees. As one of the first public universities established in the United States, the University opened to students on February 15, 1868,[5] as an agricultural center focused on science research.[6][7]

About Us

The School of Music at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign provides outstanding undergraduate, graduate and continuing education programs that reflect the mission of the university to be a top 10 public research institution. The school offers an array of degree options: Bachelor’s degrees in Composition, Performance (with concentrations in Performance or Theory/Composition), Music Education or Music Therapy; Master’s degrees in Conducting, Composition and Performance. Students are also afforded opportunities for cross-disciplinary study by participating in one of several annual festivals such as SONIC VISION New Music Festival or RECITAL IN THE PARK: A Celebration of Contemporary Piano Literature.

Students benefit from our excellent faculty who are leaders both nationally and internationally—many serve as guest artists/clinicians with professional orchestras including Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and Cleveland Orchestra among many others; conductors Artistic Director David Charles Abell (CSO), Associate Conductor Alexander Mickelthwate (CSO)—and composers—John Luther Adams winner Pulitzer Prize 2016

Academics

The School of Music offers a wide variety of degrees that can be earned at the undergraduate and graduate level. Undergraduates can do so through a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in music education, music performance, music theory and composition, or ethnomusicology. The school also offers numerous certificate programs for students who are interested in pursuing a particular aspect of music without pursuing a full degree program. Graduate students have their choice of two master’s degrees: one in music education and one in either performance or composition.

Also offered is a Doctoral Degree in Music Education that provides students with extensive knowledge regarding current issues within the field as well as an understanding of diverse cultural traditions related to music making. Students wishing to pursue this degree must first complete all requirements for their undergraduate degree before applying for admission into this program.

Faculty

Facilities

The School of Music is a large building that houses many rooms, each with instruments and facilities for working on them. There are also plenty of classrooms to teach students in, as well as several offices where teachers can work with their colleagues on lesson plans and other projects.

The building is divided into four wings: the East Wing, which contains practice rooms; the North Wing, which houses faculty offices; the South Wing, which provides access to all practice rooms and classrooms; and The Center (which serves as an entrance hall), connecting these individual spaces together in such a way as to not only provide easy access but also make it easy for people within each area
