Seattle University is a private, Jesuit university located in the First Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Founded by Archbishop John Joseph Durkin in 1891 as the first Catholic institution of higher learning in the state of Washington and named for its proximity to Seattle’s oldest park (now known as Volunteer Park), Seattle University is also known for its academic rigor and commitment to social justice. In fact, it was one of only three colleges that offered degrees in law at the time—and has been ranked among the top 100 law schools by U.S. News & World Report ever since. Today, SU boasts a student body made up of both men and women, with an average class size hovering around 14 students per teacher who come from all over the country (and world) to study at this small urban campus located right next door to downtown Seattle’s many cultural attractions.
