The prevalence of simulation in nursing education is increasing due to its demonstrated benefits for learner competence and patient safety. This article describes the results of a project designed to introduce multiple, interprofessional simulation scenarios (ISSSs) into nursing programs. Simulation scenarios focused on patient safety, teamwork, communication and interprofessional collaboration were implemented in an academic setting. The integration of ISSSs into the nursing curriculum was positively received by student participants and allowed for practice of high acuity skills in a safe learning environment.

Simulation scenarios are increasingly being used to teach nursing students. In a recent project, several colleges of nursing began to use simulation scenarios in their undergraduate and graduate programs. The results showed that the approach significantly improved student knowledge and performance on clinical skills tests.

The article describes how students were randomly assigned to watch or participate in simulations, then evaluated on their knowledge of patient assessment guidelines and clinical skills tests before and after training with the use of simulation scenarios. Students who participated in simulations improved significantly more than those who watched them, suggesting that learning from simulated experiences was more effective than simply viewing them.

This article describes the results of a project designed to introduce multiple, interprofessional simulation scenarios (ISSSs) into nursing programs. The purpose of this study was to describe how simulation scenarios could be used to teach basic communication skills and develop an understanding of different roles within health care settings. This project was conducted from November 2003 through May 2004 by three nursing faculty members who each had experience teaching in various clinical settings.

The benefits of this project include:

  • Student satisfaction with their learning opportunities increased as they realized that hands-on activities were directly related to what they would experience when working in their chosen field. Students also reported that role playing helped them gain confidence for future interactions with patients and other healthcare providers by providing them with practice speaking up about their needs and concerns.
  • Faculty members indicated that developing ISSSs helped them become more familiar with available equipment, procedures and technology at their institutions before actually using it during class sessions or on clinical assignments. As well as learning how these items functioned, faculty members were able to understand potential issues or problems associated with using these tools which may arise during practice sessions/clinical experiences later on down the road as well.”
