Master of Social Work

The Master of Social Work (MSW) program is an advanced study that focuses on preparing graduates for administrative and leadership roles in social work. The MSW is a research-based degree that may take two to three years to complete, depending on whether it’s a full-time or part-time program. The MSW differs from a Bachelor of Social Work in that this master’s degree requires completion of a capstone project and thesis. Students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in social work can apply directly to the graduate program at Sonoma State University.

Those who are admitted are required to have access to reliable transportation and have the ability to travel during their time at SSU. In addition, candidates must provide documentation of current TB clearance, CPR certification and proof of professional liability insurance by August 1st each year. Applicants should contact the School of Social Work for details about meeting these requirements prior to starting the program.

Once accepted into the MSW program, students receive a thorough foundation in core competencies such as human behavior theories, social policies, independent practice skills and group facilitation practices. MSW students are also able to choose from several areas of concentration, including gerontology, mental health or children & family services. Many graduates go on to pursue careers as behavioral health specialists, clinical case managers or community service directors for local agencies or nonprofits serving low-income families. The program requires 30 units and is administered by the School of Science and Technology, which is not accredited by the Computing Accreditation Commission (CAC) of ABET, Inc., www.abet.org/.

Master of Arts in Speech Language Pathology

The Master of Arts in Speech Language Pathology is a high-quality program designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to become eligible for American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) certification as well as the Clinical Fellowship year. This intensive cohort model program can be completed in two calendar years, provided you are enrolled full time during the summer terms. The program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Classes are held on Wednesday afternoons, all day Thursday, and Friday mornings.
