Southern University and A&M College School of Nursing was established in 1954.

The Southern University and A&M College School of Nursing was established in 1954. The school has produced over 3500 graduates, who are currently practicing in a variety of health care settings throughout the world. The first class of 12 students graduated in 1956. In 2001, the school received approval by the Louisiana State Board of Nursing to offer an RN-BSN Program; followed shortly after receiving approval to offer an MSN Program upon completion of a BSN Degree from an accredited institution. In 2010, the state approval for the Doctorate in Nursing Practice (DNP) program was obtained by Southern University Baton Rouge. The school currently offers three programs leading toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

If you’re interested in looking back on our history, the original Southern University program was introduced and offered to 12 students in 1956. Of that first class of 12, 11 graduated with diplomas. This was an important time for us as a university and it’s something we still recognize today.

The school currently offers three programs leading toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).

The BSN program is designed for students who already hold a bachelor’s degree in another field and wish to transition into the nursing profession. For students with no previous college experience, SUNO offers a two-year program leading to an ASN degree. Students may then complete their bachelor’s of science in nursing at SUNO or transfer elsewhere.

SUNO also offers a master of science in nursing (MSN) for students with a BSN degree who wish to pursue an advanced level of learning as well as professional certification. The MSN program has options for nurse practitioners, educators, and administrators.

Southern University has educated more than 3,000 nurses in its School of Nursing since it was established more than 50 years ago. It was the first nursing school at a historically black college and is currently one of the largest nursing programs in the country.

The school currently offers three programs leading toward a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The BSN program has two components, the 1+2+1 option and the 3+2 option.

The 1+2+1 option is for students who have not completed a bachelor’s degree. Students complete the first year of the pre-licensure program at Southern University, followed by two years in the nursing major at Southern University. Students then return to the School of Nursing to complete their final year and are awarded the BSN from both institutions. The 3+2 option is for students who have completed a bachelor’s degree in any discipline other than nursing. They will complete three years of study on campus at Southern University and receive their BSN upon completion. There is also an RN to BSN program offered that allows individuals who are registered nurses but do not have a baccalaureate degree in nursing an opportunity to earn one without having to leave their current job or home setting.

The first component is an 11-month pre-licensure training known as Transition to Practice (TTP). At the completion of this phase, students are eligible to sit for the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN).

The TTP is essentially a condensed version of the BSN program and focuses on core nursing curriculum. During this phase, students take part in lectures, labs and clinical experiences at various hospitals, clinics and community settings. It is designed for registered nurses who have no previous nursing education but hold a bachelor’s degree in another field.

Following successful completion of all components, the student will complete the BSN degree requirements and graduate from SU with a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

The student is required to follow the curriculum as stated and pay all tuition, fees and other related costs.

Upon successful completion of the program, the student will receive a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing (BSN).

Incoming undergraduate nursing students may qualify for a one-time scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based on academic “merit” to full-time freshmen who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement.

Students can make contact with the school directly through email or phone to get help in applying for financial aid. There are many scholarships available to new and returning students. The scholarships below are provided by Southern University Nursing Department.

• Incoming undergraduate nursing students may qualify for a one-time scholarship. Scholarships are awarded based on academic “merit” to full-time freshmen who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement.
• The National Alumni Association (NAA) offers scholarships to students who are members of NAA and whose parents, grandparents, or legal guardians graduated from Southern University and A&M College or Prairie View A & M University, or any member of the SU System schools.
• Students who have been active members of an HBCU Greek Organization at least one year prior to enrolling as a full-time student at Southern University Baton Rouge may be eligible for this scholarship funded by the Legacy Foundation of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
• Undergraduate students who have participated in JROTC while they were enrolled in high school may be eligible for this scholarship funded by the Legacy Foundation of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.

Located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, the Southern University School of Nursing is a part of the Southern University and A&M College System. The school offers undergraduate and graduate degree programs in nursing. Both programs are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). SACSCOC is an accrediting body for degree-granting higher education institutions in southern states.
