Religious affiliation

Saint Mary’s University of California is formally affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church and administered by the De La Salle Christian Brothers, a religious order that was founded and has been dedicated to the service of God and the education of youth since its founding in 1680.

As an expression of its Catholic heritage, Saint Mary’s University supports campus ministry groups. Students have opportunities to participate in these groups as well as community-based organizations such as Campus Ministry or other local parishes near campus. The Division for Student Affairs also provides resources for spiritual development through retreats, daily prayer sessions and programs designed to help students develop their faith life during their time on campus.

Mission statement

The College was originally established in 1863 by the Most Reverend Joseph Alemany, Archbishop of San Francisco, as St. Mary’s College at Moraga. The College was originally located in San Francisco and moved to Moraga in 1881. In 1927 St. Mary’s College became the first Catholic college on the West Coast to be named a university and it became known as University Of San Francisco or USF for short until 1972 when it was renamed to its current name of Saint Mary’s University of California (SMUCA).

History

The university was founded in 1863 as St. Mary’s College by the De La Salle Christian Brothers and has a 320-acre campus in the Moraga hills.

In 1881, the college became one of the first U.S. institutions of higher learning to award bachelor’s degrees to women.[1] Through its affiliation with International University Sports Federation (FISU) and Universiade, SMU is able to participate in sports events such as basketball and volleyball.[2][3]

Academics

The university offers bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctoral programs through its five schools: The School of Education and Professional Studies, The School of Liberal Arts, The School of Nursing and Health Sciences, The School of Social Work and St Mary’s Graduate Programs. There are more than 100 undergraduate majors at the university. It also offers a number of pre-professional programs that students can use to prepare for law school or medical school.

The university has an average high school GPA requirement for undergraduates who want to get into their university program is 3.0 on a 4 point scale from 0-4; however, some majors have higher requirements such as biology major requiring 3.5 GPA or higher depending on your current class rank/class size along with your current class standing before entering this particular major at St Mary’s University Of California Incorporated (SMU)

Athletics

In addition to the University’s academic programs and facilities, St. Mary’s also has a large athletic department that offers a variety of activities for students at all skill levels. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer and swimming while women’s sports are basketball (indoor), cross country (indoor), golf (indoor), lacrosse (indoor), soccer (indoor) softball or softball with volleyball as the alternate sport).

The athletics department currently features over 20 teams in NCAA Division I competition and offers many different levels of play for each sport. For example: there are varsity teams for men’s basketball (Division I) as well as both indoor and outdoor track; there is also an active club program consisting of both men’s and women’s volleyball teams competing at the national level each year.

Student life

Student life is a very important part of the university. There are many opportunities for students to get involved in clubs, groups and organizations on campus. These include fraternities, sororities and other social clubs; political groups like the College Democrats or College Republicans; religious organizations such as Campus Crusades for Christ; community service clubs like Habitat for Humanity; academic honor societies such as Phi Beta Kappa or Mortar Board; sports teams including varsity athletics (both men’s and women’s), intramural sports, club sports and exercise programs such as yoga classes or tai chi lessons.

Traditions

• The St. Mary’s Bell
• The tradition of the St. Mary’s Bell began in the late 1960s and has continued ever since. The bell is rung at the end of each day for students to gather and reflect on their day, as well as marking special occasions such as graduation.
• The St. Mary’s Bell Tower & Choir
• This tradition was first established in 1987 by Professor Marvin Gassman, who felt that an organ would help enhance the university experience for students by providing an aesthetic focus point for campus life.
