STFX Admission Requirements

The following admission requirements must be met by all applicants to St. Francis Xavier University.

Admission Requirements – For All Programs

As you consider your options, here are the STFX admission requirements for all programs.

If you’re looking to transfer to STFX and complete a degree program, this is the section for you. Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • Transfer credit from other institutions and where it applies in your program of choice;
  • Admission criteria and steps;
  • Additional information about our transfer program and its requirements for upper year entry (if applicable).

1. English Language Requirement

  • Minimum TOEFL score of 80
  • Minimum IELTS score of 7
  • Minimum MELAB score of 77

2. Academics

In addition to meeting the minimum admission requirements, you will also need to meet certain academic topics. These include:

  • English (Grade 12) – 6 credits
  • Math (Grade 12) – 6 credits (C- or higher)
  • Physics (Grade 12) – 4 credits (C- or higher)
  • Chemistry (Grade 12) – 4 credits (C- or higher)
  • Biology (Grade 12) – 3 credits (C- or higher; may be waived if student takes IB Biology SL Course during final year of secondary schooling.)

Social Studies/Economics/Business: 2 courses with a combined total of 10 credits as follows: Grade 11 Economics 1 and/or Grade 11 Business 1; plus one other course from Social Studies, Economics and Business.

Humanities Requirements: At least two courses in each of the following areas at an academic level that satisfies university entrance requirements: Fine Arts, History and Philosophy.

Fine Arts Requirements: At least one full credit course in visual arts, music theory or dance technique at an academic level that satisfies university entrance requirements

3. Reference Letters

Reference letters are one of the most important parts of the admission process. They are used to evaluate a student’s suitability for university education and determine his/her ability to succeed in a post-secondary institution.

A reference letter should be no more than one page long, typed and signed. It must come from someone who knows you well: your high school principal or vice-principal, an instructor who has taught you at least once during your high school years, or a supervisor from an extracurricular activity (e.g., sports team).

4. Admission Agreement and Non-Refundable Deposit

After you have received your offer of admission, you will be asked to complete an application and pay a non-refundable deposit. The amount of this deposit varies according to the program for which you are applying.

Applicants who accept their offer must submit a $500 USD tuition deposit within two weeks. If this deadline is not met, your offer may be cancelled, but we are happy to reinstate it if you contact us within 30 days of receiving your decision letter.

University Transfer Program Admission Requirements – Upper-Year Entry

To be eligible for admission to the University Transfer Program, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.
  • Have completed at least one year of undergraduate study prior to applying.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale).
  • Have completed at least 30 credits at your previous institution(s). The 30 credits may include: -A maximum of 6 transferable Indigenous course credits; -A maximum of 6 transferable developmental course credits; -Credits transferred from another post-secondary institution where you were previously enrolled as an undergraduate student; and/or -Advanced standing credit granted by Memorial University upon completion of an approved program in another university or college outside Newfoundland and Labrador

STFX Admission Requirements

STFX admission requirements are fairly straightforward, with one exception: if you’re an international student and not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada, there are some additional steps. You’ll need to submit proof of funds and an English language proficiency test with your application.

STFX admission requirements for all programs (both undergraduate and graduate) include:

  • Proof of English Language Proficiency (if applicable)
  • A personal statement outlining why you want to attend STFX, what courses you’d like to take, etc.

STFX offers a wide variety of programs for students to choose from. There are many opportunities to get involved with activities, clubs, and sports on campus.
