The Swinburne Institute of Technology was established in 1965 by the then Victorian Government as an institution to train engineers and technology professionals. Sir Ninian Stephen, former Governor-General of Australia, has been the Chancellor since 2004.

From its establishment in 1965 until 1984, Swinburne Institute of Technology had campuses at Caulfield East and Hawthorn. The Hawthorn campus closed in 1987 and most classes were transferred to Caulfield East where the campus remains today.
