TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.

In addition to two annual conferences — the TED Conference on the West Coast each spring, and the TEDGlobal conference in Edinburgh UK each summer — TED includes the award-winning TED Talks video site, the Open Translation Project and Open TV Project, the inspiring TED Fellows and TEDx programs, and the annual TED Prize.

What’s TEDx?

TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

What’s TED-Ed?

TED-Ed Originals are currently published as a weekly series on the main TED-Ed YouTube channel. Each original is a short video lesson, animation, or talk created by educators and animators around the world. TED-Ed lessons are designed to spark curiosity, encourage dialogue, and foster empathy.

This series intentionally intersects with TEDx Talks filmed in schools and universities around the globe to amplify our support of young voices worldwide. We hope you’ll join us!

Why isn’t my talk on YouTube?

TED is an organization that organizes conferences where people present ideas and discuss them. I’ve done a TEDx talk in the past and watched a lot of the talks on YouTube. When stumbling across this page, I was dismayed to see that my talk wasn’t available on there. It’s only because of my talks being on TED that they’re not there!

I’ve asked several times over the last few years if I could put my talks up there, but they are mostly refused due to copyright issues. The fact is that most videos are taken down after some time because of copyright complaints from companies who own their rights. So it’s impossible for me to upload them myself to YouTube or Vimeo—but luckily you can still find most of my older speeches online!

How can I get a transcript of my talk?

Did you know that TED is a nonprofit organization? Well it is. We also have some partners, such as TEDx and TED-Ed. Our mission is to spread ideas, so we allow anyone around the world to organize a local TEDx event, under a free license granted by TED. Similarly, teachers can create their own lessons based on TED-Ed videos through the TED-Ed platform. This allows students to learn in many different ways and spaces!

TED is open to anyone who wants to share an idea.
