The University of Edinburgh is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in the world. The university’s main campus is located in the city center, but it also has several satellite campuses throughout Edinburgh. The University of Edinburgh library system has over 2 million volumes available for students, faculty members and researchers at any given time.

Main Library

The University Library is located in the heart of the Old Town, close to many other academic buildings.

The main library building and its collections are open to all members of the public, but researchers may need to reserve a place at a table or desk. The library has over 1 million books and journals, as well as access to electronic resources including ebooks and databases.

Services include:

• Libraries & collections: The libraries offer a wide range of services for students and staff such as study spaces; computer rooms with access to e-journals; printing facilities for black-and-white photocopying (photocopiers available); scanning (from microfiche only) and loanable laptops with wireless internet access provided by eduroam (see below), subject specialists who can help you find information or suggest resources relevant to your studies; regular research seminars where experts will present their latest work in an informal setting so that you can ask questions afterwards etcetera…

Old College

Old College is the oldest building on campus. It was built in 1580 and has served as Edinburgh University’s main library since 1710. It is also the oldest building in Scotland, United Kingdom, and the European Union.

Old College was originally built as a church but became a university library when James IV founded Kings College in 1451. In 1579/80 it was transformed into a new college by Sir William Schaw (the Regent). After this, Old College continued to function as both a church and academic institution until 1710 when it became solely a university facility.

George Square

The library is located in the heart of Edinburgh and serves as a popular place for students to study. It has a cafe, children’s area and also a quiet area for those who want to take some time away from the hustle and bustle of life to relax on one of its sofas or simply read a book in peace.

Centre for Research Collections

The Centre for Research Collections, better known as CRC, is a library that focuses on rare books and manuscripts. This collection includes over 2 million books and 1.5 million manuscripts, along with over 50,000 music scores and 100+ artworks. The library is located on the King’s Buildings Campus in Edinburgh.

Easter Bush Campus (Veterinary Studies)

The Campus is situated in Easter Bush, which is about a 20-minute walk from the city centre. The campus is home to the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, which has a library and student union as well as sports facilities. The veterinary school also has its own cafeteria on site.

King’s Buildings Campus (Engineering and Chemistry)

King’s Buildings Campus (Engineering and Chemistry) is located north of the Old Town, next to Holyrood Park. The campus houses several buildings, including the King’s Buildings which are home to the library, along with several other research facilities. The Engineering and Chemistry Library is open to students from all colleges on this site, as well as any members of staff who hold an active University of Edinburgh library card.

The King’s Building Library Hours are 9am-5pm Monday through Friday on weekdays only; there are no weekend hours available at this facility. During these times, students can check out books for up to 21 days maximum with three renewals permitted; there is also a daily limit of 10 items checked out per person due to limited space in the building itself so please be mindful when checking out materials so everyone can access what they need!
