The Western University of Australia (WUOA) is the only research intensive university in Western Australia. Its main campus and headquarters are located in Perth, with regional campuses in Albany, Broome and Bunbury.

The University has a proud history dating back to its foundation as a teachers’ college in 1913 by Sir John Winthrop Hackett. The first Vice-Chancellor was Professor David Rivett (1913-1914), who went on to become Director-General of UNESCO and founder of The Australian National University College at Crawley, Canberra.[1]

In 1996 WUOA merged with two other universities – Murdoch University and Curtin University – becoming what was known as “Curtin/Murdoch/Western” until 2010 when all three institutions received full university status.[2]

WUOA is the largest university in Western Australia by number of students, it was established in 1911, having descended from the University of Western Australia which was founded in 1904.

The university’s main campus is located in Perth, a tertiary education hub for both domestic and international students.

The university has seven schools including a School of Medicine and Pharmacology; School of Dentistry; College of Law; School of Veterinary and Life Sciences; Business School; Nursing & Midwifery Faculty (including Midwifery); Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The University includes six faculties: Engineering, Science and Mathematics; Business and Economics; Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Health and Medical Sciences; Law; Education and Indigenous Studies. The university also has several affiliated colleges, including Nedlands College, Trinity College, St Catherine’s College, St George’s College, Pentagon College and University Hall within the residential college system; and Curtin College within the Higher Education Centre System.

The current vice-chancellor of the university is Professor Stuart Kelly AO (born 1959) who replaced Professor Paul Johnson AO on 1 January 2017.

WUOA is a founding member of the Group of Eight (Australia), a coalition of research intensive Australian universities.

Western is a founding member of the Group of Eight (Australia), a coalition of research intensive Australian universities. The university is also a member of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
