Overview
Scholarships are financial aid awards made to undergraduate students based on academic merit and/or financial need. Unlike student loans, scholarships do not require repayment. Scholarships can be awarded directly by the institution or organization offering the scholarship, or through outside sources such as corporations, non-profit organizations, philanthropists and private foundations.
Scholarships are available for students in any field of study at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Eligibility criteria can vary widely depending on the goals and priorities of the awarding organization: academic merit, athletic ability or talent in a specific area (music or visual arts) are common criteria used to select scholarship recipients. Financial need is another common criterion used to select scholarship recipients; however, there are a number of scholarships that do not take financial need into account when selecting recipients (for example: academic merit-based scholarships).
While some colleges award no-need scholarships based solely on academic achievement during high school, most universities consider other factors as well: standardized test scores (SAT/ACT), extracurricular activities and leadership experience (e.g., involvement in student government), demonstrated interest in attending the institution awarding the scholarship and letters of recommendation from teachers/counselors all play an important role in determining eligibility for merit-based awards.
