Campus Life

The University of California Irvine is a public research university. Its undergraduate colleges, most recently the UCI College of Natural Sciences and UCI Henry Samueli School of Engineering, are located on its main campus in Irvine, California. All ten UCI schools and nearly two dozen research facilities are located on this campus. Research

UCI is a leading research university. UCI is ranked in the top 25 universities in the world for research, according to the 2019 Times Higher Education World University Rankings and UC president Janet Napolitano has been an effective advocate for increasing federal funding for science research.

UCI is also a member of two important associations: the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and Association of American Universities (AAU). The APLU includes all public universities that are land-grant institutions, including UC Berkeley, UCLA and UC Davis. The University of California, Irvine (UCI) is a public research university located in Irvine, California. UCI is one of three University of California campuses that operate under the 10-campus system established in 1960 by then Governor Pat Brown. UCI offers 106 undergraduate degrees and 87 graduate degrees.[3]

The Regents of the University of California established UC Irvine as a teaching and research university on March 3, 1965 with an initial enrollment of 1,000 students.[4] Classes began for its first 26 undergraduates on September 4, 1965 at Santa Ana College. In 1966, the campus opened its doors to 1,100 students for fall quarter; since that time various new academic units have been added to its first academic program in education.[5] In 1970 the campus was renamed from “University of Orange County” to “University Of California at Irvine”.[6]

In 1991 it was asked by the state government to be independent from UCR due to budget problems.[7] Then in 1994 it once again became part of UCR when both campuses received equal funding from one source.[8][9][10][11][12][13].
