The University of California, Berkeley School of Law, commonly known as UC Berkeley School of Law or Berkeley Law and often abbreviated U.C. or Cal, is one of 14 schools and colleges at the University of California, Berkeley. Founded in 1868 (the oldest law school on the West Coast), it was the second school established in California (after Hastings College of the Law) and first authorized by the state legislature to confer degrees in law.[2] It is located in Oakland

History

The school, founded in 1894, was originally named the University of California School of Jurisprudence, and then renamed as the College of Law in 1913. In 1920, it was renamed as the School of Jurisprudence, and again in 1937 to its present name: UC Berkeley School of Law.

In 1959 and 1964 it became a public institution; it was later named after Earl Warren; in 1965 there was an additional name change which came about due to a philanthropic gift from Edwin Wesson (and his estate) which provided funds for construction costs associated with the new building; this resulted in an official naming ceremony held on May 5th where he received an honorary degree from UC Berkeley School Of Law while also having his name attached permanently onto their campus itself

The school has an impressive list of notable faculty, including Richard H. Fallon, Jr., who served as the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York under President Jimmy Carter; Erwin Chemerinsky, founder and dean of the University of California Irvine School of Law’s law school; Laurence H. Tribe, a professor at Harvard Law School and author; Sandra Day O’Connor, former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court (1981-2005); and Anthony Kennedy (appointed by Ronald Reagan), now retired Associate Justice who still teaches at UC Berkeley

Eric Holder, U.S. Attorney General and former Deputy Attorney General under President Bill Clinton; Janet Napolitano, former governor of Arizona, former Secretary of Homeland Security under President Barack Obama and current president of the University of California system; John C. Eastman (class of 1979), law professor at Chapman University; Elizabeth Warren (class at night program in 1992), senior senator from Massachusetts; Anthony Kennedy (class of 1960), Associate Justice on the U.S. Supreme Court; Kamala Harris (class of 1988), junior senator from California; Barack Obama (#13) and George W Bush (#91) both attended UC Berkeley before transferring to Harvard Law School where they became roommates during their first year there.[1][2] William Rehnquist was a graduate student at UC Berkeley’s Boalt Hall School Of Law while teaching courses there during his time as an assistant professor in 1953-1954,[3][4] while Stephen Breyer taught law classes during his time as an assistant professor at Harvard Law School between 1967-1971.[5]
