Located within the city center of Addis Ababa, it is home to five colleges: College for Humanities & Social Sciences; College for Natural Resources & Life Sciences; College for Engineering & Technology; College for Business Administration & Economics and College for Medicine & Health Sciences

The university currently has 10 faculties, 40 departments, 2 institutes as well as 1 college offering 23 master degrees (including MBA program) and 25 PhD programs. The total number of courses offered is 287 at both undergraduate and postgraduate level (as of 2015).

The University of Ethiopia was founded in 1954 by Emperor Haile Selassie with the name Addis Ababa University (AAU). It was renamed as “University College” in 1961; following which it was upgraded to full-fledged university status on July 24th 1974 under its current name Ethiopian University when a new charter came into force under Emperor Haile Selassie’s rule. Since its foundation more than 175 000 students have graduated from this institution.

The UEA has many graduates who are located all over the world. There are more than 20 countries where its graduates live and work. The UEA international activities include teaching staff exchanges with universities abroad; student exchange programs; research collaboration among staff members and with foreign universities; participation in conferences held by institutions overseas; visiting scholars from different parts of the world; sending lecturers to give lectures at foreign institutes as well as inviting lecturers from other countries to teach on our campus.

Among these graduates many have gained national as well as international recognition for their contribution to various sectors such as academia, politics, business etc. A large number of graduates from all campuses work in public service and private enterprises both within Ethiopia and abroad.
