The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team will return to the pitch on Friday, looking to start the 2018 season off on a high note. After last year’s midseason turn-around and overall improvement of the program, head coach Ian Carry isn’t ready to settle for just being better than last year. “I think that the bar is always set high. For us, we want to be the best,” Carry said. With a preseason ranked No. 2 in the Southeastern Conference and receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll, Kentucky hopes its aim of being the best results in an NCAA Tournament berth. “If you don’t set your expectations high then there is no point in playing, so that has been our focus all preseason,” senior goalkeeper Brooke Pirrmann said

The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team will return to the pitch on Friday, looking to start the 2018 season off on a high note. The Wildcats (0-3) will take on Kentucky Wesleyan (2-1) at 6 p.m. in Lexington, Ky., in their first home match of 2018.

After last year’s midseason turn-around and overall improvement of the program, head coach Ian Carry isn’t ready to settle for just being better than last year.

You may have heard about the Wildcats’ turnaround last year, when they finished their season with a record of 6-10-2 and a top-five ranking in the SEC East. What you probably don’t know is that this was after starting off the season with a 1-5 win/loss record (the program’s worst start since 2015). The team turned it around by winning five games in a row, and ultimately became one of only three teams to defeat South Carolina last year.

Coach Ian Carry didn’t settle for just having his team be better than last year—he wanted them to be better than any other team in the country. As such, he’s been working hard all summer long on perfecting his game plan and making sure his players are ready for another championship run this fall.

“I think that the bar is always set high. For us, we want to be the best,” Carry said.

“I think that the bar is always set high. For us, we want to be the best,” Carry said. “We want to be the best team in our conference, and then we want to be one of the best teams in the country and then one of the best teams in the world.”

The Lady Cats are particularly amped up for this year’s season because they’ve been waiting all offseason to show off their new uniforms. The university released its new kit on Friday and it features a predominantly black color scheme with green accents throughout—a stark contrast from last year’s light blue-on-white kits.

In addition to wearing some snazzy new duds out on campus this fall, UK women’s soccer will also kick off its season at home against UNC Greensboro on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m., before traveling down state for a match against Louisville at 11 a.m., Sept 1st at Lynn Stadium (get tickets here).

With a preseason ranked No. 2 in the Southeastern Conference and receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll, Kentucky hopes its aim of being the best results in an NCAA Tournament berth. The Wildcats are coming off their first trip to the quarterfinals since 2011 after finishing second behind Texas A&M last season with a 14-4-4 record and 10-2 mark in conference play.

Kentucky’s success is largely due to its offense, which has scored 31 goals this season through 12 games—the fifth most among teams that have played an entire regular season schedule thus far. The Wildcats rank third nationally with 1,356 shots on goal (10th all time) while also ranking fifth nationally with 728 corner kicks taken (11th all time). Senior midfielder Rachel Jones leads UK with 11 goals while junior forward Elisha Justice has nine goals and six assists.

“If you don’t set your expectations high then there is no point in playing, so that has been our focus all preseason,” senior goalkeeper Brooke Pirrmann said.

Many goalkeepers have a different perspective on the game than other players. As a goalkeeper, you are often the last line of defense for your team. It is essential for you to be confident and focused in order to make split-second decisions and communicate with your teammates effectively when there is an opportunity to put the ball in play or defend against an opposing player’s attempt at scoring.

The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team will open its season on Aug. 23 when they host Lenoir-Rhyne University at 1 p.m., followed by their home opener against Northern Kentucky at 4 p.m., also on Aug. 23.
