Offense

The University of Marshall football team has a number of offensive players that can create problems for opponents. The most notable player on the Marshall offensive side is quarterback Rakeem Cato, who was one of the top quarterbacks in Division I football last season. Cato has shown great poise under pressure and can make difficult throws look easy. He is complemented well by receivers Emmanuel Sanders and Jordan Westerkamp, both of whom are explosive playmakers. Sanders has averaged over 20 yards per catch in each of the past two seasons, while Westerkamp has topped the 1,000-yard mark in each of his three seasons at Marshall.

Marshall also features a strong running game. Junior Khalfani Muhammad led the team with 1,603 yards and 19 touchdowns on 322 carries last season. Muhammad is joined by sophomore Juniata Thompson, who had 914 yards and 10 touchdowns on 130 carries as a freshman. The running game will be crucial for Marshall as it attempts to take down opponents in the Big 12 Conference.

Defensively, Marshall features a number of players with plenty of potential. Defensive end Adrian Baker is one of the most talented players in the Big 12 Conference and could be a first-round pick in the upcoming NFL Draft

Defense

The University of Marshall football team enters the 2017 season with a lot of returning players and some new ones. The defense is led by All-American safety Jarrod Herrington and returning starters at linebacker Adam Bisnowaty, defensive end Nathan Shepherd and cornerback Azubuike Ukropina.

Special Teams

The University of Marshall football team is blessed to have a talented and experienced special teams unit. Led by head coach Jason Marshall, the Thundering Herd have one of the most exciting and potent squads in all of Division II.

Marshall’s special teams units have been key contributors to many wins over the years. In fact, the Herd has never finished lower than sixth in the nation in blocked kicks (38). This success can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of each player on the team.

Every member of Marshall’s special teams unit takes pride in their job, and they all understand that their success as a team is reliant on working together. This teamwork has led to many memorable victories, including knocking off then-No. 5 Southern Illinois 41-39 in 2007, in addition to other impressive victories against lesser opponents.

Whether it is preventing field goals or making crucial tackles on kick returns, Marshall’s special teams units are always ready for battle. They are a force to be reckoned with, and I am sure that they will continue to bring home big wins for the Thundering Herd this season and beyond.

Season Outlook

The University of Marshall football team enters the 2017 season with high expectations. The Thundering Herd finished 2016 with an 8-4 record, which included a win over eventual NCAA Division II national champion Central Kentucky. Marshall returns most of its key players from last year’s team, including quarterback Chase Litton and running back Anthony Pettway.

Marshall will face a tough schedule in 2017, starting with a game against the defending national champion Union College Dutchmen. After playing Union, Marshall will travel to Illinois to take on the Fighting Illini before returning home to play Chattanooga. The Thundering Herd then takes on Alabama A&M before closing out the regular season with a matchup against West Texas A&M.

If Marshall can win all of its games in 2017, they would secure an invitation to the FCS playoffs. However, even if Marshall only wins two of its six games, they would still be in contention for a spot in the playoffs due to their conference record.
