The University of Maryland at Baltimore (UMB) is a public research university in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. It is part of the University System of Maryland, and has satellite campuses in the cities of Towson and Hunt Valley. The institution began as a medical school in 1807 and was chartered in 1812 as the nation’s first college of medicine. In 1925 it merged with the Baltimore Polytechnic Institute to form a public university under its current name.

Student Life

Student Life at UMBC has something for everyone. Students can participate in a variety of clubs and organizations, including academic, athletic and service oriented groups. Clubs are open to all students, regardless of major or class level.

Students should make sure that they have an active role in the life of UMBC! There are many ways for students to get involved on campus:

• Sports – The Intercollegiate Athletic Department offers intramural leagues for both men’s and women’s sports including basketball, soccer and volleyball as well as club teams such as lacrosse and softball.
• Performances – Concerts by local artists are regularly held at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center on campus featuring music genres such as jazz, classical and world music styles offered free to all UMBC faculty/staff members with student IDs; tickets can be purchased online by anyone who wishes to attend these events (but must be reserved online beforehand). Many Broadway plays have also been produced here over the years such as Rent which ran during May 2013; The Lion King made its debut here back in November 2015 before being moved onto Broadway later down the road (where it continues running today!).
