UNF’s sports teams are known as the Ospreys, and they compete on the Division I level in the Atlantic Sun Conference. The men’s basketball team is one of just two NCAA Division I men’s basketball teams in all of Florida—the other being Stetson University in DeLand.
The Ospreys are currently coached by Matt Driscoll. The team plays in the Atlantic Sun Conference, having joined in 2001 after leaving the NAIA and playing as an independent for three years. They have won the regular season championship three times (2001, 2004, 2006). The Ospreys made their first NCAA tournament appearance during the 2014–15 season after winning the Atlantic Sun Tournament but lost to top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth University in the First Four round of 64 teams.
The Ospreys have competed in the Atlantic Sun Conference since its formation in 1979. They won their first conference title in 1988, with a win over Lipscomb University in the championship game of that year’s tournament. The following year, they repeated as champions with another win over Lipscomb, this time by two points. In 1990, they made their only appearance in the NCAA Tournament but lost to eventual national champion UNLV in the opening round.
Following the next season (1991–92), they moved from Division III to Division II and began competing as an independent program before joining a newly formed Great Midwest Athletic Conference (now known as the Horizon League) for 1993–94. They left that league after one season due to lack of success and returned to being an independent team until 1995 when they again joined another new league called Trans America Athletic Conference (now known as Atlantic Sun).
