We have a long history of achievement in a wide range of areas, including research, performance, composition and theory. Our faculty includes leading figures in their fields who collaborate to create an innovative learning environment that inspires students to excel as artists and scholars. This unique environment is enhanced by our location in the dynamic city of Eugene, just minutes away from world-class cultural events such as Oregon Bach Festival, Cascadia Composers Festival, Oregon Festival Chorus and many others!

The School of Music and Dance offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in music and dance, a minor in music, a minor in dance, and several outreach programs to the community.

The School of Music and Dance offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in music and dance, a minor in music, a minor in dance, and several outreach programs to the community. The curriculum is designed to develop musicianship through performance experiences that connect each student to their own creative expression. The school also emphasizes scholarship on each student’s instrument or voice as well as theoretical training which allows for an understanding of cross-cultural influences in Western art music traditions.

The Bachelor of Music degree program consists of four years of study leading to either: 1) a Bachelor of Music Degree with an area concentration in Performance; 2) a Bachelor of Music Degree with an area concentration in Composition/Arranging; or 3) a Bachelor of Arts Degree with an area concentration in Performance (applicable only if the applicant has completed coursework at another accredited institution). Students who elect Option III may not earn both degrees within five years from matriculation date because some requirements overlap between them; however, these courses may be applied toward other degree requirements such as General Education (GE), electives or minors if approved by your advisor(s).

The school’s innovative curricula reflect a unique collaboration in which professional musicians and dancers teach a core of gifted undergraduates who have opportunities to perform onstage with them.

Musicologists understand that sound evokes emotion and can influence behavior. The effects of music reach beyond just the ears: they influence your body language and posture as well as how you feel emotionally by triggering dopamine release in your brain (the pleasure chemical). It’s not just what you hear; it’s how you feel!

Our concerts are all free to the public and held on campus, so there’s no excuse not to come out. The most popular concert series are the Music Department’s Jazz Series and Chamber Series. These events take place either at Matthew Knight Arena or Lillis Atrium (more commonly known as “The Lill,” because who doesn’t like saying that?).
