Impact Athletes

The following are the top five incoming freshmen for the USD track and field team.

  • Brandon Schuler: A senior at Lincoln High School, Schuler specializes in the 100 meter dash. In 2018 he won a state championship and also ran on a relay team that placed first in Nebraska Class A.
  • Dylan Williams: A junior at South Dakota State University, Williams has been running competitively since seventh grade. He is currently ranked fifth nationally (second among high schoolers) for 100 meters and fourth for 200 meters. He was named to Team USA’s 2020 Olympic Trials qualifying roster last year when he finished second at Nationals with a time of 11 seconds flat—a new personal best!

Program Highlights

The University of South Dakota track and field program is one of the most decorated in school history. Since its inception, the Jackrabbits have won a total of seven NCAA team titles: five outdoor championships (1997-2000) and two indoor titles (2009-10).

The track and field program’s history extends back to the mid-1930s when it was known as a men’s sport only. The first women’s programs were established in 1977 with cross country and softball, followed by basketball in 1980. More than 100 student athletes compete on each squad during each season.

INDOOR ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • 2nd Place in the Mezzanine (w/ 20.43m)
  • 1st Place in the Pentathlon (w/ 3,931 points)
  • UND Open Meet: 1st place in triple jump (14.77m), 4th place high jump (1.80m), 5th place long jump (5.23m).

In the men’s 60m dash, senior Cedric White took home first place with a time of 7.7 seconds. Coming in third was freshman Mason Koopman with a time of 7.9 seconds, and junior Brady Bowers came in fourth with his 8-second finish. In the 100m dash for women, sophomore Eliza Klein won with her 13-second finish; senior Hannah Schmitt took second place with her 14-second finish; and junior Emily Hale finished third by coming in behind Schmitt by one second (15).

– Cobber Quadrangular Meet

The Cobber Quadrangular Meet, hosted by the University of South Dakota, will take place on March 2-3 at the Concordia University Track and Field Complex in Moorhead, MN. The meet will include teams from the University of Minnesota, St. Thomas University, and Sioux Falls University.

The Cobber Quadrangular is the first official meet of the season! With three days to practice before this meet starts we’re looking forward to seeing some great new talent as well as some old faces who are ready to step up their game this season!

– UND Open

UND Open is an indoor track and field meet held annually at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota. The meet is a part of the Dakota Days Invitational, an early season event that features several other indoor track meets across the state of North Dakota. UND Open is held at Alerus Center, home to UND’s football team and one of the largest arenas in all of NCAA Division I wrestling.

– NSIC Indoor Championships

In addition to winning the NSIC Indoor Championships, the Coyotes also won both the men’s and women’s indoor titles.

The Coyotes’ men’s team scored 17 points at the meet, while their female counterparts earned 13 points. The men’s title is South Dakota’s fifth consecutive conference championship in this sport and their sixth overall since joining the conference in 2004-05. The women’s title makes it five straight NSIC crowns for USD since they joined as well.
