USF was founded in 1956 as Tampa Junior College; it became an independent institution known as South Florida State College when that name was adopted on February 13, 1964. In 1967, voters approved a change from state college or university status to state university status under popular pressure from high school students who had been against having their tuition paid for with higher property taxes if their local community college became part of Florida’s tax-funded university system.[6]
USF is part of the State University System of Florida and its Board of Governors. The university is governed by a board consisting of nine members, three ex officio members and six “at large” members who are elected by the Florida legislature to serve four-year terms.
