The university was the first of the so-called “plate glass universities” to be established in the 1960s and was granted its Royal Charter in August 1961 when it had only one college, which was then called “The College of Technology”. The founders were inspired by a vision of academic excellence based on innovation – a tradition that continues with its reputation as one of Britain’s leading research-intensive universities.
In 2015, the University merged with Brighton Polytechnic (which later became Sussex University) under plans announced in 2008 by then Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The Falmer campus is located at the base of the South Downs near Brighton. It is home to the majority of the academic schools, research centres and administrative offices (including most teaching facilities). Falmer has a library with around 1 million books, for which Sussex has been awarded several national library awards; it also includes a Student Union building with bars and restaurants. The centrepiece of this part of the campus is an award-winning waterfront building called The Spyglass Tower, which houses lecture theatres as well as accommodation for about 250 students who live on campus during term time.[13][14]
The University’s Eastbourne Campus is home to its school of art history & cultural studies (AHCS) where degrees are offered in BA(Hons) History & Cultural Studies , MA Art History & Cultural Studies , MA Critical Theory & Philosophy
