Networking & Informational Interviews
- Networking
One of the best ways to find job opportunities is through networking. Networking is a process where you connect with people who can help you with your career goals or provide useful advice and insights that will help you reach those goals. To network, try the following:
- Attend events related to your industry, such as conferences, conventions and seminars. If there aren’t any events in your area, look for other opportunities like open houses or meetups hosted by potential employers.
- Talk about what you do (or would like to do) for fun when meeting new people. This helps others understand what kind of work interests them so they can pass along information when relevant job openings arise at their organization—and maybe even recommend someone else!
- Informational Interviews
Get Help with a Résumé or Cover Letter | Career Planning and Resource Center at UW-Eau Claire
The Career Planning and Resource Center (CPRC) can help you prepare a résumé or cover letter, learn how to apply for jobs, and get advice on job interviews. You can also use their resources such as the career planning guidebooks and other resources in the library. The CPRC is located on the third floor of Laux Hall. To make an appointment with a counselor, call 715-836-4717 or stop by during office hours (M–F 8:00am–4:30pm).
- Prepare your résumé
Your résumé should be easy to understand and focused on your strengths that relate directly to the position you’re applying for. Choose one page if possible; longer than two pages may not be read thoroughly by employers or hiring managers.* Prepare a cover letter
The cover letter should explain why you are interested in working at this company and illustrate why they should hire you over other candidates.* Prepare for an interview
Before going into an interview, review basic questions such as “Why do want this job?” or “What are some qualities of successful leaders?” Also practice answers using different formats so that you are comfortable speaking off-the cuff.* Use resources from CPRC
