The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health (SMPH) is a national leader in medical education, research and patient care. UW School of Medicine and Public Health has a strong commitment to clinical care. Our faculty provide care at UW Medical Center and Children’s Hospital, and work closely with schools and community health centers throughout Wisconsin. In addition to our clinical work, we also focus on improving health in Wisconsin and around the world through research that identifies new treatments, cures disease, advances understanding of illness mechanisms, improves patient outcomes, promotes healthy lifestyles and protects the environment.

Education

The medical school is accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), an independent body that accredits medical education programs leading to the MD degree in the United States and Canada. The Marquette University Department of Pharmacology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), a national accrediting agency approved by the U.S. Department of Education and recognized by Council on Postsecondary Accreditation as a specialized accreditor.

The School has a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as research, service and teaching excellence, with approximately 85% of students identifying as persons of color or international students from diverse backgrounds who have been exposed to global health experiences during their undergraduate years at UW-Madison or elsewhere prior to applying for admission into our medical school program. Research

The University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is a leader in medical research. Our faculty are world-renowned for their innovative research and have been recognized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which funds more than 80 percent of all biomedical research conducted in the United States. Many faculty members are funded by NIH for their work to understand such diseases as cancer, diabetes, aging and Alzheimer’s disease, heart disease, developmental disabilities and mental illness.

Our graduate programs have been ranked among the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report, who also named our medical school one of its Best Graduate Schools for Primary Care in 2017.
