The University Of Wisconsin Womens Hockey Team
On February 22nd, the University of Wisconsin Womens Hockey Team faced off against Lake Superior State. The Badgers came out victorious with a score of 3-1.Madison native Meghan Dugan led her team in scoring with one goal and one assist. Freshman goaltender Belen Sánchez made 24 saves in the win.
The Badgers are currently in second place in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) standings, and they have a chance to take first place this weekend when they play Gustavus Adolphus College.
History of the UW Womens Hockey Team
The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team has seen many successes over the years, but their most recent one came in November of 2017 when they won the NCAA Division I Women’s Hockey Championship. The team was made up of players from all over the United States, and together they played their hearts out to bring home the championship trophy.
The UW Womens Hockey Team got their start in 1978 as a club team. They competed in regional tournaments and eventually made it to the national tournament where they placed fourth. The following year they were back at the nationals and this time they took home the title by defeating Agricultural College of Minnesota 2-1 in the final game.
Over the years, UW Womens Hockey has had a number of great players come through its ranks, including Patty Kazmaier who is widely considered to be one of the greatest female hockey players ever. She led her team to three consecutive NCAA Division I championships in 1991, 1992, and 1993.

The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team is led by head coach Tracey Weis. She has been with the team since its inception in 2007. UW has made the Frozen Four three times (2013, 2014, and 2016), but have not won a title. They are currently ranked #5 in the nation.
Players to watch on the UW Womens Hockey Team include forwards Kaleigh Frantz and Maddie Rooney, defenseman McKayla Maroney, and goaltender Holly McPeak.
Frantz is a forward who was drafted by the Boston Blades in the 2013 NWHL Draft. She completed her college career at Wisconsin in 2017 where she was an all-American and led the team in scoring with 36 points in 23 games. Rooney is also a forward who played her college career at Wisconsin. She was drafted by the Calgary Inferno in the 2016 CWHL Draft and has since joined the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers. She has 21 points in 24 games this season. Maroney is a defenseman who completed her college career at Ohio State in 2016. Future Outlook for the UW Womens Hockey Team
The University of Wisconsin women’s hockey team has seen a lot of success in the past few years. The program has made a name for itself on the national stage, and things seem to be only getting better.
