The school has been around since 1919 and was founded by Dr. Walter Pomeroy, who was also the dean of dentistry at Northwestern University at the time. The school was originally called the American College of Dentistry and was located in Chicago, Illinois. In 1948, it moved to Los Angeles where it remained until 1999 when it merged with Western International University (WIU) which had been established in 1969 as Western College of Graduate Studies (WCGS). WCGS specialized in business administration programs while ACD focused on dental education. As part of this merger, ACD changed its name to Western University of Health Sciences (WUHS) while WCGS became known as UOP College of Osteopathic Medicine-Western Division (UOPCOM-WD).
