The University of Southern California is a private research university in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1880, it is currently the largest private research university in the United States with an enrollment of over 44,000 students and over 1,200 faculty members.
The school was founded on September 29, 1880 by Judge Robert M. Widney, who helped secure donations from several prominent businessmen and philanthropists. The school was originally named the Los Angeles College of Dentistry and Pharmacy. In 1905 it became known as the College of Dentistry and Pharmacy (CD&P). In 1925, the school moved to its current location at Eastlake Avenue and Vermont Avenue. The name changed again to the Loyola University School of Dentistry in 1926, when Loyola University joined with CD&P to form one unified institution under the direction of Hiram W. Revelle, DDS (1890-1960). Subsequently in 1932, Loyola went on to merge with USC and become known as ULCA (University Of Los Angeles).
