Lee, Tuscaloosa was originally named “Black Warrior City” after being founded as a village by Anglo-Americans during the time period when Alabama was still considered part of Georgia. Today it hosts three institutions of higher education: University of Alabama (UA) (which has more than 37,000 students), Shelton State Community College which has more than 6,000 students and Tuscaloosa Community College which has more than 7,000 students between its campuses at Childersburg and Holtville.
When you consider that UA is home to over 37,000 students – and even if all those children were born locally – that doesn’t seem like enough people to fill a football stadium! It also isn’t enough people for me feel safe walking around downtown on Friday night or Saturday night if I’m not with my husband or friends who know their way around town…
Tuscaloosa itself is great though!

The university’s first president was Reverend Rufus W. Cobb, a Baptist minister and slavery abolitionist who put down roots on what would become campus land when he acquired an ex-slave named Philo McGiffin as his farmhand. McGiffin helped Cobb build his home and his small house of worship; this building became known as “the College Building” until it burned down in 1859 (a new college building would be built on its site). Cobb also started up something called The University Institute for Boys’, which later became known as The University School and is now known as Phillips Academy Andover (it opened its doors to girls in 1971).
