University of the Pacific is a private university with about 6400 students and 5 campuses in California. It was founded in 1851 by Episcopal Bishop John S.B. Wilson as the Pacific Theological Seminary, and then became known as the College of California after it moved to Oakland in 1855. In 1869, University of California president Henry Durant led an effort to rename it University of California at Berkeley, but the original name was restored in 1923 when the school merged with Mills College.
